Navarro Democratic County Executive Committee Organizes
Corsiciana, TX March 21, 2015: Linda Mertz, Navarro Democratic Party County Chair presided over the county's newly formed County Executive Committee.
Two years ago, Navarro County found itself without a County Chair. After the former County Chair became too ill to serve. the State Democratic Party Chair appointed Linda Mertz as interim County Chair.
Mrs. Mertz was elected by the voters in the 2014 Democratic Party Primary as County Chair. When she assumed office, there were no precinct chairs. She held meetings regularly.In November 2014, Different people discusses "maybe becoming a Precinct Chair" but months passed and people would volunteer for the Party, but none stepped forward and actually agreed to be sworn in as a Precinct Chair.
David E. Cozad and his Chief of Staff Faith Chatham were the speakers at the NCDP's November 2014 meeting. The program was on the Role and Importance of Precinct Chairs. Attendees were given copies of the Texas Democratic Party Rules. Faith explained to the attendees that before a County Party can form a County Executive Committee to run the Party with the County Chair, there must be Precinct Chairs.. There were people at the meeting who lived in six voting precincts. One person from each precinct agreed to serve as Precinct Chairs. Others agreed to assist in Precinct Development.
Faith had called the State Democratic Party and inquired: "How do you handle appointing and approving precinct chairs when there is no CEC? " Glen Maxey guided her through the process. When Cozad and his Chief of Staff left Navarro County they knew that County Chair Linda Mertz had six Precinct Chairs to serve with her in reorganizing the Democratic Party in Navarro County. David Cozad agreed to bring his team back in Early 2015 and lead the newly formed Navarro Democratic Party County Executive Committee (CEC) in a planning workshop. Faith assured the County Chair that they would help "walk her through" their first CEC Meeting.
A February Date was set for the Planning Workshop and First CEC Meeitng. It snowed and had to be rescheduled.
March 21, 2015 David Cozad brought six of this Campaign Committee Team Members to Navarro County to lead their Planning Workshop and to help County Chair Linda Mertz lead the County's first County Executive Committee Meeting in over three years. The seventh Precinct Chair, Flouran Sauseda, was approved and installed as a Precinct Chair at the CEC meeting which was convened following the Planning Workshop.
County Chair Linda Mertz named Rev. Dairy Johnson Parliamentarian and Barbara White as Recording Secretary.
The CEC elected:
Rev. Dairy Johnson, Chair of the Candidate Recruitment Committee
Barbara White, Chair of Voter Registration Committee and Elbert Turner, Co-Chair
Flouran Sauseda, Latino Outreach Chair
The CEC will function as a Committee of the Whole in recruiting Precinct Chairs to fill the vacancies.
Bryan Matthew Cooke, Cozad for Congress Fellow and Ellis County Finance Chair was introduced to the group. Matt is working with Faith Chatham in establishing a Navarro/Ellis County Chapter of the Young Democrats.
The CEC authorized County Chair Linda Mertz to recruit a Treasurer, establish a County Party Checking Account and to establish an Act Blue Account.
Dairy Johnson agreed to serve as Event Chair for the Democratic Party's participation in "Derrick Days." A meeting was scheduled for Thursday, March 27.
Faith Chatham agreed to establish a website for the NCDP.
